AZ Compass takes on the Donda Academy this afternoon in the Grind Sessions “Crush in the Valley” event at Contra Costa college.  It will be an interesting game to watch to see how the Dragons come out against Kanye West’ team after a tough last second loss to Prolific Prep last night.

Donda Academy came out a little slow to start the game after having their game the previous night end at 1 am. AZ Compass built a quick 7-2 lead on a fast break basket by Kylan Boswell and solid defense from the entire team including a sweet block by Colin Smith.  Donda quickly called a timeout.

After the timeout Chance Westry had a breakaway slam dunk followed by a dunk by Josh Ola-Joseph and a strong drive and score by Boswell.  The lead for AZ Compass quickly was 16-4.

Brandon White Jr had a nice block on a shot attempt by Dylan Andrews for Donda, but the Dragons continued to drive to the bucket and play tough defense. Mookie Cook scored on a breakaway layup and halfway through the opening period AZ Compass had a 19-9 lead.

The Dragons didn’t stop the offensive pressure with Mookie Cook and Dylan Andrews scoring at will with Ola-Joseph playing great inside the key. With 4:58 left in the half the Donda coach was forced to call another timeout down 26-16.

AZ Compass coach Ed Gipson has his players pick up on defense full court late in the half and the extra pressure clearly disrupted the Donda offense.  At halftime AZ Compass had a comfortable 43-30 lead.

The Dragons came out fast to start the second half and quickly built a 48-32 lead with great offensive play by Kylan Boswell.  Javonte Taylor hit a couple shots for Donda, but they couldn’t cut the lead by the Dragons. After five minutes of second half play AZ Compass had a 53-38 lead. Donda called a timeout with 13:04 left and the score was 53-40.

After the Donda timeout AZ Compass put their foot on the gas pedal. In a five minute span of great defense and sharing the ball on offense the score quickly was 61-44.

Robert Dillingham tried to bring Donda back with a couple quick scores, an alley oop pass for a dunk to Brandon White Jr and a breakaway dunk by JJ Taylor and the score was 66-60 with 4:14 left on the clock.  Ed Gipson called a timeout to regroup his Dragons.

After the timeout Jahki Howard had a huge throw down dunk and the score was just a 4 point lead for AZ Compass.  Taylor scored on a layup and that quickly we had a 2-point game at 66-64.

Taylor then drove to the bucket and was fouled by Ola-Joseph. Taylor made both free throws and Donda used a timeout still down just 2 points 68-66 with 2:24 left.

AZ Compass came out of the timeout and turned the ball over to Donda.  Dillingham quickly came down and passed to Taylor who hit a 3 to give Donda their first lead of the game at 69-68. White Jr scored inside on a dunk and Donda was up 71-70. Mookie Cook grabbed a loose ball after the White Jr bucket and drove the length of the floor to score and get the lead back for the Dragons 72-71. AZ Compass then took a timeout to organize for the last 10.3 seconds.

Dillingham drove the length of the floor as time expired and passed to White Jr who missed the 3’ shot as time expired.  Final score AZ Compass 72, Donda 71.
