Ending a summer in which he established himself as one of the most powerful bigs in the country, Class of 2026 four-star prospect Marcis Ponder is transferring to the Grind Session’s West Oaks Academy for his junior season.

A 7-foot, 300-pound center – who has multiple nicknames such as “The Show” or “Baby Shaq” or “Lil Shaq” – Ponder played last season for the Cold Hearts in Overtime Elite (OTE). He was also named to the OTE team that represented the United States this summer at the Adidas Next Generation Tournament Finals in Berlin, Germany.

“Marcis is a great kid, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family,” said Grind Session CEO Scott Waldrop. “Joining our circuit reaffirms his commitment to his craft and future. We’re excited to be part of his journey.”

Ponder has garnered multiple offers from college programs, including Alabama, Florida State, Illinois, and Kansas, reflecting his potential as a top recruit. His game is characterized by his ability as a dominant rim protector and a powerful inside scorer, often excelling as a catch-and-dunk threat. Although his offensive stats in OTE were modest, his defensive impact and physical tools make him a highly regarded prospect.

On3, who has Ponder ranked No. 29 in the 2026 class, was among those sitting courtside for this year’s Pangos All-American Camp in Las Vegas. The popular college recruiting site had this to say about Ponder in their recap of the camp’s top performers:

“Marcis Ponder is a physical presence. It is hard to ignore when he steps on the floor with his frame. When he plays, he shows off his explosion. He is quick off his feet, finishing consistently around the basket and through contact. Ponder has passer-friendly hands and is a good area rebounder.”
